Osteological Control Record 056-R

Catalogue designation: Red Bloody X-Mas Skull
Related record: 055-L, Lilac Bloody X-Mas Skull
Primary question: Can 056-R serve as the ordinary-blood control for the lilac skull specimen?

Records places the skull next to 055-L.

Records: Same skull. Red this time.

Z. Omb: Similar skull.

Records: You refuse to make anything easy.

Z. Omb: Comparison requires that we first establish what is actually comparable.

The skull again wears a black Santa-style hat.

The staining distribution is broadly similar to 055-L:

  • around the lower margins,
  • near parts of the eye sockets,
  • along exposed bone,
  • and transferred onto the hat trim.

This time, however, the coloration is conventionally red.

Records

Normal blood?

Z. Omb

Let us test it.

A small dried sample is taken from loose residue.

Hemoglobin is present.

Red-cell remnants are detectable.

No additional lilac pigment component appears.

Records

So yes.

Z. Omb

Ordinary blood currently explains the sample sufficiently.

Records

Normal Christmas skull.

Omb looks at Records.

Records

You know what I mean.

That makes the specimen unusually useful.

055-L and 056-R provide a near-matched pair:

same type of object
same general surface geometry
same textile accessory
similar stain distribution
different fluid chemistry

Z. Omb

This reduces several confounding variables.

Records

The festive skulls are scientifically convenient.

Z. Omb

Unexpectedly.

The red sample behaves differently on the hat fabric than on bone.

On the skull, it dries primarily along pores, edges and recesses.

On the textile, it spreads farther through capillary action.

Records

Same thing we saw with the lilac one.

Z. Omb

Which is useful. It means the substrate effect appears reproducible across both fluids.

That lets them separate two questions:

1. What does the surface do to the stain?
2. What does the fluid chemistry do differently?

The eye sockets again contain darker pooled residue.

Records

Could have come from inside.

Z. Omb

Could have.

Records

But also could have run in.

Z. Omb

Exactly.

The red control reinforces the same conclusion:

pooling location does not establish biological source.

The hat is removed carefully.

There is no evidence it is biologically connected to the skull.

Records

Still disappointing for ancient Christmas burial theory.

Z. Omb

That theory had no evidence to begin with.

Records

Which is why it was fun.
