Z.O.M.B. LABORATORIES

Combustion Analysis 128-R

Object: Four-branch candelabrum
Candles present: 4
Candles burning at intake: 3
Observed flame colour: Blue

Records classification: “Ghost Candelabra”

Classification rejected.

There is currently no evidence of a ghost.

INITIAL OBSERVATION

Blue flame coloration is not intrinsically anomalous.

Flame colour depends upon combustion conditions and chemical composition.

Possible explanations include:

1. fuel composition;
2. wick treatment;
3. metallic salts or other additives;
4. combustion temperature and oxygen availability;
5. contamination;
6. optical effects;
7. deliberate manufacture.

These will be investigated before proposing explanations involving deceased persons.

TEST 1 — AMBIENT CONDITIONS

Air sampled.

No unusual atmospheric composition detected.

Ventilation normal.

Temperature normal.

No significant local airflow sufficient to explain observed behaviour.

TEST 2 — CANDLE MATERIAL

Small wax sample removed from Candle 1.

Separate combustion performed using laboratory equipment.

Flame:

Yellow.

Repeated.

Yellow.

Wax therefore does not independently reproduce the observed blue flame.

Interesting.

TEST 3 — WICK

Wick sample examined.

No obvious metallic impregnation detected during preliminary analysis.

Additional spectroscopy requested.

Replacement wick inserted into sampled wax.

Flame:

Yellow.

Original wick with laboratory paraffin:

Yellow.

Z. OMB — NOTE

Good.

Records:
Good?

Z. OMB:
Yes.

Records:
Because none of your explanations worked?

Z. OMB:
Because several explanations have been eliminated.

A failed hypothesis is useful information.

TEST 6 — CANDLE REMOVAL

Candle 2 removed from candelabrum and extinguished.

After cooling, candle was relit on laboratory bench.

Flame:

Yellow.

Candle extinguished.

Returned to original socket.

Relit.

Flame:

Blue.

Repeated three times.

Same result.

Research priority amended: High.

TEST 9 — POSITION DEPENDENCE

Candles exchanged between sockets.

Result:

Blue flame occurs according to position on candelabrum, not individual candle.

Therefore the candles themselves are unlikely to be responsible.

Candelabrum examined.

No fuel line.

No electrical components.

No detectable heating element.

No obvious chemical reservoir.

Material appears consistent with conventional metal construction.

TEST 12

Inserted standard laboratory candle into Socket 1.

Blue.

Inserted different commercial candle.

Blue.

Inserted improvised cotton wick with paraffin reservoir.

Blue.

Records

Can we call it the Ghost Candelabra now?

Z. OMB

No.

Records

Why not?

Z. OMB

We have established an unexplained combustion phenomenon associated with the object.

We have not established survival of consciousness after biological death.

Those are substantially different claims.

TEST 15 — FOURTH SOCKET

Candle 4 has remained unlit since acquisition.

Attempted ignition.

Wick ignites normally from external flame.

Upon removal of ignition source:

Extinguishes.

Repeated.

Same result.

Candle exchanged.

Same result.

Socket 4 does not sustain combustion.

The other three do.

TEST 18 — THERMAL IMAGING

No relevant temperature anomaly detected within candelabrum body.

TEST 19 — ELECTROMAGNETIC SURVEY

No unusual result.

TEST 20 — MATERIAL ANALYSIS

Pending.

PRELIMINARY CLASSIFICATION

Candelabrum: Physical object
Flame-position association: Confirmed
Blue combustion: Reproducible
Fourth position unable to sustain flame: Confirmed
Known chemical explanation: Not yet identified
Anomalous: Candidate
Ghost: Unsupported

Records:
What would it take for you to classify it as haunted?

Z. OMB:
Define haunted.

Records:
Oh no.

Z. OMB — FINAL NOTE

The phenomenon is reproducible.

Its mechanism is currently unknown.

These statements are sufficient.

There is no scientific advantage in replacing “unknown” with a more interesting word.

Investigation continuing.
