An exceptionally fluffy little bat with absolutely enormous wings.

Morphological Examination 097-F
Catalogue designation: Fluffy Bat
Preliminary classification: Chiroptera
Sex: Undetermined
Condition: Apparently healthy
Research priority: Moderate
RECEIVING OBSERVATION
Specimen presents with disproportionately large apparent body volume relative to head size.
Wing morphology is broadly consistent with Chiroptera.
Body is approximately spherical while resting.
Initial possibilities:
1. Unusual adipose distribution.
2. Abnormally dense pelage.
3. Postural effect.
4. Combination thereof.
5. Something else.
Records
Could you not just say it's fluffy?
Z. Omb
That is precisely what I am attempting to quantify.
EXAMINATION 2 — BODY VOLUME
Palpation indicates that visible body diameter substantially exceeds underlying torso diameter.
No corresponding excessive adipose layer detected.
Conclusion:
Mostly fur.
Records
How much?
Z. Omb
Unknown.
Records
Can we measure it?
Z. Omb
Yes.
PROCEDURE 097-F-4
THE FLUFF PROBLEM
Objective:
Determine the relationship between anatomical body volume and apparent body volume produced by pelage.
Non-invasive imaging performed with fur in natural resting configuration.
Approximate torso boundary reconstructed beneath coat.
Difference substantial.
Records
Can we have a percentage?
Z. Omb
Eventually.
Records
Why eventually?
Z. Omb
Because “percentage fluff” is not an established biological measurement.
Records
You started this.
Z. Omb
Yes.
OBSERVATION 6 — COMPRESSION
No deliberate compression beyond ordinary handling approved.
Instead, specimen observed during self-grooming and changes in posture.
When fur is naturally compressed against the body, apparent diameter decreases considerably.
When disturbed and subsequently raised—
Records
You scared it?
Z. Omb
No.
Records
How did you make it puff up?
Z. Omb
I did not.
A cardboard tube fell over in the adjacent room.
Records
And?
Z. Omb
Apparent body volume increased.
Records
How much?
Z. Omb
Twenty-three percent relative to the preceding image.
Records
You measured it.
Z. Omb
Obviously.
OBSERVATION 9 — FLIGHT
The spherical appearance is primarily a resting-state phenomenon.
During wing extension and flight, the actual torso becomes substantially more apparent.
No obvious impairment of flight caused by pelage.
Wing loading calculations should therefore use estimated anatomical mass and wing area rather than apparent resting silhouette.
Records
So it's just an extremely fluffy bat.
Z. Omb
Current evidence supports that description.
Records
That's what I said on day one.
Z. Omb
You had not measured it.
OBSERVATION 14
Specimen entered resting enclosure.
Wrapped wings partially around body.
Fur expanded between folded wing margins.
Resulting shape:
Approximately spherical.
Z. OMB — NOTE
Very efficient thermal geometry.
Further investigation warranted.
Records
You just want to keep measuring the fluff.
Z. Omb
These statements are compatible.
FINAL CLASSIFICATION
Order: Chiroptera
Exact species: Unresolved
General health: No abnormalities identified
Apparent spherical morphology: Predominantly pelage
Flight: Functional
Anomalous properties: None established
Research priority: Low
Provisional fluff index: Under revision.
Records
Is “fluff index” scientifically recognized?
Z. Omb
It will be internally reproducible.
Records
That's not what I asked.
Z. Omb
I know.
This gives Omb a slightly different kind of scientific ridiculousness: the question is silly, but the methodology isn't. Once Omb decides “how fluffy is this bat?” is a measurable question, they actually have to define what “fluffy” means, decide what variables represent it, create a reproducible measurement and distinguish fur volume from body volume.
Which is, annoyingly, legitimate methodology.
