Primary question: What happens when a symbol includes both highly saturated colors and visually neutral bands?
Records places the Non-Binary edition beside the other Pride variants.
Records: Yellow, white, purple, black.
Z. Omb: A useful combination.
Records: Why this time?
Z. Omb: Because two of the bands are chromatic and two are effectively neutral.
That gives Omb a different variable to play with.
The yellow and purple are visually assertive.
White and black do something else: they create separation, contrast and structure.
Records
So the “boring” colors are actually important.
Z. Omb
Black and white are not functionless merely because they lack hue.
Records
You know what I meant.
Omb starts removing bands.
yellow + purple
Still vivid.
But the identity cue weakens.
Then:
yellow + white + purple
Stronger.
Then:
yellow + purple + black
Also stronger.
Then the full set:
yellow + white + purple + black
Records
So the neutral bands help the colored ones read properly.
Z. Omb
They contribute structure and contrast, yes.
Records
Like punctuation.
Omb pauses.
Z. Omb
That analogy is useful.
Records
I'm on a roll lately.
The edition also raises a useful visual-memory question.
When viewers recall a Pride flag, do they remember:
- the exact colors,
- the order,
- the contrast pattern,
- or just one or two dominant colors?
Records
Purple and yellow probably do a lot of the remembering.
Z. Omb
Possibly.
Records
And black and white make it look “right.”
Z. Omb
That is exactly the kind of perception claim worth testing.
