Primary question: How much of a symbol can change before people stop recognizing the identity it refers to?

This version gives Omb a slightly different problem from the previous Pride editions because the Intersex flag is unusually minimal: yellow field, purple circle.

Records shows Omb the edition.

Records: Intersex.

Z. Omb: Because of the color scheme?

Records: Yes.

Z. Omb: And if we remove the circle?

Records: There isn't really a literal circle here.

Omb looks again.

Z. Omb: Exactly.

The background borrows the yellow-and-purple identity cue, but does not reproduce the flag literally.

That makes it useful.

Omb begins writing:

SYMBOL RECOGNITION WITHOUT EXACT FLAG REPRODUCTION

Records:

People still know what it references.

Omb:

Some will. That is the variable.

The question becomes whether identity recognition depends on:

  • exact geometry,
  • exact color pairing,
  • relative color dominance,
  • cultural familiarity,
  • or simply knowing which edition one is looking at.

Current record

Edition: Intersex
Identity cue: Yellow + purple
Exact flag geometry reproduced: No
Reference still recognizable: Plausible / audience-dependent
Main slogan unchanged: Yes
Artwork text: `FASHISM’S NOT CUTE`
Catalogue text: `Fascism’s Not Cute`

Records adds:

APPARENTLY A FLAG CAN SURVIVE BEING TURNED INTO A VIBE.

Omb writes underneath:

Potentially.
