CEREBROSCOPE CLASSIFICATION RECORD 104-D

Submitted designation: Duckie
Probable identification: Duckling

Z. OMB

Why “Duckie”?

Records

Look at it.

Z. OMB

I have.

Records

And?

Z. OMB

It resembles a duck.

Records

There you go.

Z. OMB

That was not the question.

INITIAL CLASSIFICATION

Observed characteristics:

  • yellow plumage or plumage-like covering;
  • broad, flattened bill;
  • approximately avian body plan;
  • reduced apparent neck length;
  • wing-like lateral appendages;
  • disproportionately large eyes;
  • unusually rounded torso.

A juvenile duck is a reasonable preliminary identification.

However, several characteristics are heavily stylized.

Species identification from morphology alone is therefore inappropriate.

Working designation: Duckie.

Records

Wait.

Z. OMB

Yes?

Records

You're keeping Duckie?

Z. OMB

It is currently the most defensible designation.

Records

I wasn't expecting that.

Z. OMB

Neither was I.

NOTE 2 — YELLOW

Yellow coloration is commonly associated with ducklings in human visual culture.

This association should not be generalized to all ducks.

Duckling plumage varies substantially between species and may include combinations of yellow, brown, cream, black and patterned markings.

Therefore:

Yellow + small + bill ≠ taxonomic identification.

It does, however, explain why Records immediately said “duck.”

NOTE 4 — PROPORTIONS

The eyes are disproportionately large relative to the head.

The head is disproportionately large relative to the body.

The body is highly rounded.

These proportions increase perceived juvenile characteristics.

This resembles a broader phenomenon in human perception in which features such as large eyes, large head-to-body ratio, rounded forms and small facial structures increase perceived infantile or “cute” appearance.

Records

Are you scientifically confirming that Duckie is cute?

Z. OMB

No.

Records

It sounded like you were.

Z. OMB

I am describing morphological characteristics known to influence human perception of cuteness.

Records

Is Duckie cute?

Z. OMB

Yes.

Records

Right.

NOTE 7

The pale thoracic marking resembles a heart.

No anatomical significance inferred.

Records

Thank you.

Z. OMB

For what?

Records

Not investigating whether the duck has a heart-shaped organ.

Z. OMB

There was no evidence suggesting that.

Records

I'm learning.

FINAL CLASSIFICATION

Object/organism represented: Avian juvenile, probable duckling
Exact species: Undetermined
Common archival designation: Duckie
Yellow: Confirmed
Round: Considerably
Heart-shaped chest marking: Visual marking only
Anomalous: No evidence
Cute: Yes

Research priority: None

Records

You put “cute” in the classification.

Z. OMB

You requested clarification.

Records

I'm keeping it.

Z. OMB

That is why I wrote it down.

This gives Omb another small nuance I like: precision doesn't require rejecting ordinary language.

“Duckie” starts as an extremely unspecific catalogue name. But once Omb realizes that the available evidence doesn't actually justify anything much more precise, Duckie becomes the scientifically safer label.

And again, Omb has no difficulty saying something is cute. Omb just distinguishes:

Why does this morphology tend to trigger human perceptions of cuteness?

from:

Do you personally think Duckie is cute?

Those are different questions. Ask the second one and Omb can simply answer yes.
