Z.O.M.B. LABORATORIES
Lepidopteran Coloration Record 035-B
Catalogue designation: Blue Butterfly
Subject: Living butterfly
Primary question: Is the blue color produced by pigment, structure, or both?
Records places the transport enclosure on the examination table.
Records: Blue butterfly.
Z. Omb: Yes.
Records: No argument?
Z. Omb: It is visibly blue and evidently a butterfly.
Records looks suspicious.
Records: That was too easy.
The butterfly is active and appears healthy.
Four wings.
Six legs.
Clubbed antennae.
Scaled wings.
No obvious deformity.
The coloration is immediately striking:
bright blue across most of the wings, with darker margins and turquoise-green patterning.
Records
Pigment?
Z. Omb
Possibly.
Records
Structural color?
Z. Omb
Also possible.
Records
Both?
Z. Omb
That is why we test.
The butterfly is observed under different lighting angles.
The blue shifts slightly in intensity.
Some turquoise areas become brighter.
Other regions remain comparatively stable.
Records
So some of it is shiny.
Z. Omb
Angle-dependent.
Records
Same idea.
Z. Omb
Not quite.
Butterfly wings are covered in microscopic scales.
Those scales can contain pigments.
But their structure can also manipulate light through reflection, interference and scattering.
Omb uses non-destructive microscopy.
Z. Omb
There.
Records
What?
Z. Omb
Scale architecture.
The blue regions show fine repeating structures.
The darker areas contain more obvious pigment.
Records
So the blue is structural?
Z. Omb
At least partly.
Records
And the turquoise?
Z. Omb
Possibly mixed structural and pigment effects.
Records
That sounds like cheating.
Z. Omb
Biology is allowed to use more than one mechanism.
A naturally shed wing scale is recovered from the enclosure floor.
No scale is removed directly from the butterfly.
Under higher magnification, the scale shows ridges and cross-ribs that alter reflected light.
Records
So the color isn't just “painted on.”
Z. Omb
Correct.
Records
The wing is basically microscopic optical engineering.
Omb looks at Records.
Z. Omb
That is a surprisingly good description.
The butterfly is then viewed under broad-spectrum light, narrow-band light and polarized illumination.
Different markings respond differently.
Some maintain hue.
Others change brightness strongly.
Records
Does the butterfly see the same colors we do?
Z. Omb
Not necessarily.
That opens a second question.
Many butterflies can detect ultraviolet wavelengths humans cannot see.
So the visible blue pattern may not be the full pattern.
Records
Meaning it could look completely different to another butterfly.
Z. Omb
Potentially.
Records
Now that's rude.
UV-sensitive imaging reveals additional contrast not obvious to human vision.
Not an entirely different design.
But enough to show that parts of the wing function as signals outside ordinary human perception.
Records
So we weren't seeing the whole butterfly.
Z. Omb
We were seeing the portion accessible to our visual system.
Records
That's basically what I said.
CURRENT RECORD
Organism: Butterfly
Wing coloration: Bright blue with turquoise and dark markings
Color mechanism: Mixed; structural coloration strongly supported in blue regions
Pigment contribution: Present in darker regions, probable elsewhere
Wing scales: Normal butterfly-type scales with specialized microstructure
Angle-dependent color shift: Observed
UV patterning: Additional contrast detected
Anomaly: None required
Research priority: Moderate, optics and sensory ecology
Records adds:
BLUE CONFIRMED
Omb adds:
TO HUMAN VISION.
Records:
You had to ruin it.
