Z.O.M.B. LABORATORIES
Comparative Sample Record 116-L
Object: Tooth
Visual similarity to Sample 115-R: High
Primary difference: Colouration
Records designation: Lilac Bloody Tooth
Z. OMB:
Has the material been confirmed as blood?
Records:
That's what it's called.
Z. OMB:
That was not my question.
INITIAL EXAMINATION
Sample 116-L superficially resembles Sample 115-R.
Both consist of tooth-like structures exhibiting substantial external discolouration.
Sample 115-R presented predominantly red-brown staining.
Sample 116-L presents pigmentation ranging from pink through magenta to purple.
It would be convenient to assume the two materials differ only in colour.
Convenience is not evidence.
Samples collected.
NOTE 3
Several explanations remain possible.
The colouration may represent:
- blood altered chemically after deposition;
- blood containing an additional pigment or compound;
- non-blood biological material;
- exogenous staining;
- microbial activity;
- chemical contamination;
- a substance unrelated to Sample 115-R despite visual similarity.
No preferred explanation yet.
Records
Could blood actually be purple?
Z. OMB
That question requires clarification.
Records
Of course it does.
Z. OMB
Human blood?
Records
Fine. Human blood.
Z. OMB
Not normally in the manner represented here.
Records
Other blood?
Z. OMB
Now the question becomes more interesting.
COMPARATIVE NOTE 6
Blood does not require hemoglobin.
Several animal lineages use different respiratory pigments.
Hemocyanin, for example, uses copper rather than iron and can produce blue oxygenated hemolymph.
Some organisms possess other pigments and circulatory chemistries.
Therefore:
“Blood must be red” is false.
However:
“Some circulatory fluids are not red” does not establish that this purple substance is blood.
These statements should not be confused.
TEST 8
Preliminary screening does not provide sufficient evidence to classify the staining.
Further chemical characterization recommended.
Sample preserved.
No destructive testing beyond current requirements.
Records
So what do we call it until then?
Z. OMB
Sample 116-L.
Records
The product needs a name.
Z. OMB
You already have one.
Records
But you just objected to it.
Z. OMB
No.
I objected to treating the name as an analytical result.
Records
So Lilac Bloody Tooth is fine?
Z. OMB
For the catalogue, yes.
Records
Even though we don't know whether it's blood.
Z. OMB
You also called 106 an elf.
Records
Fair.
PRELIMINARY CLASSIFICATION

Purple material: Unidentified
Blood: Possible; unconfirmed
Anomalous: Undetermined
Further analysis: Warranted
Z. OMB — note
Visual resemblance is useful for generating hypotheses.
It is not a substitute for testing them.
