Records:
Why a spider?
Z. OMB:
Why not?
Records:
Spiders aren't associated with Christmas.
Z. OMB:
Are you certain?
ADDENDUM 126-A
I should not have asked that question.
There are Christmas spider traditions.
Several Eastern European folk traditions tell variations of a story in which spiders decorate a Christmas tree with webs, frequently followed by the webs becoming silver or gold.
The story is sometimes used to explain traditions involving tinsel or spider ornaments.
Precise versions vary.
Therefore the original assertion—
“Spiders aren't associated with Christmas.”
—is false.
Records:
So the stocking is traditional?
Z. OMB:
No.
Records:
But you just—
Z. OMB:
The existence of Christmas spider folklore does not establish that this particular stocking derives from it.
Records:
Right.
Z. OMB:
It may simply contain a spider because someone likes spiders.
Records:
That's considerably less exciting.
Z. OMB:
I disagree.
FINAL CLASSIFICATION
Christmas object: Yes
Spider: Yes
Historically impossible combination: No
Direct connection to Christmas spider folklore: Unsupported
Anomalous properties: None
Research priority: Low.
Z. OMB — final note:
Apparently humans have been putting spiders into Christmas stories for considerably longer than Records expected.
No further investigation required.
Pause.
Additional note:
I have requested three papers concerning the geographic development of the Christmas spider tradition.
This does not change the research priority.
