A little neuroscience in considerably more interesting colours.

This original brain sticker combines recognizable cerebral anatomy with vivid purple, magenta, pink and red gradients and simplified flowing linework. A bright anatomical design for science lovers, medical and psychology enthusiasts, students, or anyone who thinks brains deserve better colour palettes.

Anatomical Record 105-N

Submitted designation: Purple Colorful Brain
Classification: Stylized anatomical representation
Probable organ: Human brain
Anomalous properties: None observed

Z. OMB — INITIAL NOTE

The representation is simplified but recognizable.

Lateral orientation.

Cerebral hemispheric surface represented through abbreviated sulcal and gyral patterning.

Cerebellum and brainstem are not represented with sufficient anatomical detail for meaningful assessment.

Colouration is non-physiological.

This is not a criticism.

Records

We didn't think it was.

Z. OMB

Good.

NOTE 2 — COLOUR

Actual neural tissue does not exhibit this distribution of saturated violet, magenta and pink.

This has no bearing on the usefulness of the image as an artistic representation.

Anatomical illustration has never been restricted to literal colour reproduction.

Colour can instead distinguish structures, communicate relationships, establish visual hierarchy, or simply make the subject easier to look at.

In this instance, it appears primarily aesthetic.

It is effective.

NOTE 6 — SURFACE MORPHOLOGY

The visible folds of the cerebral cortex are not decorative structures.

Gyri increase cortical surface area within the limited volume of the skull, separated by grooves of varying depth conventionally described as sulci and fissures.

The pattern is sufficiently consistent to permit identification of major anatomical landmarks while retaining substantial individual variation.

Two healthy human brains are therefore not expected to possess perfectly identical surface geometry.

Records

Like fingerprints?

Z. OMB

No.

Records

They both have unique patterns.

Z. OMB

That does not make them equivalent identification systems.

Records

I said like fingerprints.

Z. OMB

Then specify which property you are comparing.

Records

The patterns differ between people.

Z. OMB

Then yes.

Records

Thank you.

Z. OMB

Your original statement was underspecified.

Records

I know.

NOTE 11 — MASS

Average adult human brain mass is approximately 1.3–1.4 kilograms, with considerable normal variation.

Brain mass alone is not a useful measure of intelligence.

Neither is overall brain size.

Neither is number of visible cortical folds without additional context.

I am adding this because someone will ask.

Records

Nobody asked.

Z. OMB

Someone will.

NOTE 17 — NEURAL TISSUE

A brain is not composed solely of neurons.

Neural function depends upon interactions among neurons, multiple glial cell populations, vasculature, extracellular environments, chemical signalling systems and extraordinarily dense networks of structural and functional connectivity.

Reducing cognition to “neurons firing” is useful only at very low explanatory resolution.

Records

How low?

Z. OMB

Approximately the resolution at which saying “the laboratory operates because electricity moves through wires” explains this facility.

Records

Technically true.

Z. OMB

Precisely.

ADDENDUM

Records requested a short identification note.

The current document is 34 pages.

Records

Omb.

Z. OMB

Yes?

Records

Thirty-four.

Z. OMB

The brain is complicated.

Records

The sticker isn't.

Z. OMB

It depicts a brain.

Records

We needed enough information to catalogue it.

Z. OMB

Then you only require page one.

Records

What are the other thirty-three pages for?

Z. OMB

The brain.
