Mycological Comparison Record 047-BG

Catalogue designation: Blue/Green Drippy Mushroom
Related record: 046-VB, Violet/Blue Drippy Mushroom
Primary question: Are the droplets in 047 produced by the same mechanism as those in 046?

Records brings the specimen in beside the earlier drippy mushroom file.

Records: Another one.

Z. Omb: Similar morphology.

Records: Same thing, different colors?

Z. Omb: That remains to be established.

The cap is predominantly blue.

The stalk is green.

The droplets are also green, with several sitting directly on the cap and others hanging from or falling away from the edge.

That immediately makes 047 useful as a comparison specimen rather than a repeat.

The first test is simple.

One droplet is collected after it detaches naturally.

No cutting.

No puncturing.

No squeezing.

Records

Please tell me this one also moves uphill.

Z. Omb

Not yet.

The droplet behaves normally under gravity.

Records looks disappointed.

Z. Omb

That is still information.

Records

Less entertaining information.

Chemical comparison with 046 begins.

The new droplet is not identical.

Similar water-rich base.

Similar dissolved organic material.

But several compounds differ substantially in concentration.

Records

So not the same slime.

Z. Omb

Not chemically identical, no.

Records

Same family?

Z. Omb

Possibly.

That becomes the better question:

Are 046 and 047 variants of one biological process, or unrelated organisms producing superficially similar exudates?

The cap surface is examined.

The droplets appear to form at several discrete points rather than coating the whole cap uniformly.

Records

Like pores?

Z. Omb

Possibly secretory structures.

Under magnification, tiny localized surface depressions are visible beneath some droplet sites.

Records

So it is deliberately producing them?

Z. Omb

The organism appears to secrete fluid through defined structures.

“Deliberately” implies agency.

Records

You know what I meant.

The fluid is tested for ordinary guttation-like behavior.

Changes in humidity affect production rate.

So does substrate moisture.

But droplet formation does not stop completely under conditions where simple surface condensation should.

Z. Omb

So atmospheric condensation is insufficient.

Records

Actual mushroom juice.

Z. Omb

Exudate.

Records

Mushroom juice.

The stalk receives less attention at first, until color analysis shows something interesting.

The green is not just surface pigment.

The tissue itself contains green coloration through much of the outer stalk layers.

Records

Chlorophyll?

Z. Omb

Unlikely.

Records

Because fungus.

Z. Omb

Correct.

No conventional photosynthetic tissue is identified.

The green pigment remains chemically unresolved.

Records

So green does not mean plant.

Z. Omb

Correct.

The blue cap and green droplets also fluoresce differently under UV illumination.

The cap shows weak response.

The droplets show stronger fluorescence.

Records

Useful?

Z. Omb

Possibly as a diagnostic difference between secreted fluid and surrounding tissue.

Records

So the slime glows more than the mushroom.

Z. Omb

Under ultraviolet illumination, yes.

The next comparison is with 046’s unusual droplet movement.

047 droplets are tested on glass at different inclines.

Downhill.

Sideways.

Level.

Nothing climbs against gravity.

Records

So 046 stays weirder.

Z. Omb

At present.

Records

Ranking established.

Z. Omb

No.

CURRENT RECORD

Organism: Mushroom-like fungus
Cap: Blue
Stalk: Green
Droplet color: Green
Droplet origin: Active exudation strongly supported
Atmospheric condensation alone: Insufficient explanation
Droplet chemistry identical to 046: No
Related secretion mechanism to 046: Possible
Uphill droplet movement: Not observed
UV fluorescence: Stronger in droplets than cap
