Food Observation Record — 078-M
Designation: Strawberry Milkshake
Record type: Prepared food; flow and structure observations
Related records: 077, botanical comparison; 076, beverage observations
Working question: How much of a milkshake’s apparent thickness belongs to the drink, and how much belongs to the way we look at it?
Records
The milkshake arrived with its preparation notes.
I put those beside the glass before Omb could ask whether the strawberry component had come from yesterday’s fruit.
Z. Omb
“Excellent. Someone has anticipated the difference between proximity and provenance.”
Records
“You were going to ask.”
Z. Omb
“Yes. Now I can enjoy having an answer.”
The ingredients had been blended before delivery. The cream was added afterwards, through a piping nozzle. The strawberries were from a separate kitchen batch; the pink fruit in Record 077 had not been requisitioned for dessert.
Omb noted the distinction and turned their attention to the glass.
Its vertical fluting divided the milkshake into alternating bright and dark bands. In some bands the drink looked nearly opaque; in others it appeared lighter and thinner.
Records
“It looks like it has layers.”
Z. Omb
“From this seat.”
Omb moved the lamp. Several bright bands moved with it. Others stayed aligned with the moulded glass.
They rotated the glass slightly, then inspected the exposed surface from above.
Z. Omb
“We have reflections, a shaped container and a coloured mixture. We should establish a boundary before naming a layer.”
Records
“So the glass is doing some of the presentation.”
Z. Omb
“Quite a lot. A useful collaborator with terrible documentation.”
A small serving from the same batch went into a plain comparison cup. Without the fluting, the drink looked much more uniform.
That did not establish perfect uniformity throughout the original serving. It did give us a reason to stop treating every visible stripe as a separate ingredient.
Then Omb lifted a spoonful.
The milkshake fell back in a thick ribbon. A shallow mound remained briefly where it landed, then settled into the surface.
Records
“Thick.”
Z. Omb
“Yes. Now let us make that word earn its place.”
They recorded the serving temperature and repeated the observation after a timed interval. The later spoonful settled more readily.
Records
“Warming?”
Z. Omb
“A plausible contributor. Time has also passed since blending. We have changed more than one thing.”
Records
“Your dessert has become an experiment with an inconvenient number of variables.”
Z. Omb
“That is how most desserts begin.”
They kept the note modest: the mixture’s behaviour changed during observation. A controlled comparison would be needed to separate temperature effects from changes associated with standing.
The cream swirl presented a different problem.
Its upper curl held its shape while the milkshake below it flowed. Along the rim, pale trails extended down the inside of the glass.
Records
“The topping is melting into it.”
Z. Omb
“Some of it is moving into it. ‘Melting’ would commit us to a particular process.”
Omb watched one trail lengthen. Its lower edge moved slowly, while the upper curl remained recognisable.
Z. Omb
“The topping can lose shape, drain or mix without all of those changes being the same event. We can describe the trail first.”
Records
“Pale topping descends. Attractive spiral gradually becomes less ambitious.”
Z. Omb
“The first sentence goes in the record.”
Records
“And the second?”
Z. Omb
“Beside the drawing.”
The lilac straw was next.
Its visible outline appeared displaced where it entered the drink. Omb checked it from another angle, then lifted it out. It was straight.
Records
“The familiar bent-straw trick.”
Z. Omb
“Familiar phenomena still deserve to be seen properly. Especially when the glass adds its own complications.”
They returned it to the serving and changed the viewing angle again. The apparent displacement changed.
No flexible joint was required. No damaged straw had been discovered.
Finally, the prepared serving was tasted at the food table.
Records
“Strawberry?”
Z. Omb
“Yes.”
Records
“Pleasant?”
Z. Omb
“Yes.”
Records
“Do those answers require a comparison cup?”
Z. Omb
“For this afternoon, they require a second spoon.”
CURRENT RECORD
Identity: Prepared strawberry milkshake with a separately applied cream topping.
Provenance: Kitchen preparation notes supplied. No established ingredient connection to the strawberry in Record 077.
Appearance: Pink mixture in fluted glass. Reflections and container shape contribute to the visible vertical bands.
Flow: A spoonful briefly forms a mound before settling. Later observations show easier settling; the cause has not been isolated.
Topping: The piped swirl initially retains its shape. Pale trails extend into the drink along the glass.
Straw: Straight when removed. Its apparent displacement changes with viewing angle while immersed.
Anomalous behaviour: None observed.
Margin note — Records: Preparation notes prevented a strawberry custody dispute.
