Orange and non-orange coat pigmentation in domestic cats is associated with the X chromosome.

In individuals carrying different alleles on two X chromosomes, early developmental X-chromosome inactivation can produce populations of cells expressing different pigmentation alleles.

Those populations expand during development.

The visible coat can therefore contain large regions derived from different cellular lineages.
