Osteological Holiday Intake 055-L

Catalogue designation: Lilac Bloody X-Mas Skull
Object: Biological skull with textile headwear
Related records: 053-L, 116-L, 118-L, 130-L
Primary question: Is the lilac material on this skull related to the other lilac blood-containing specimens?

Records places the specimen on the examination table.

The skull is wearing a Santa hat.

Records

Festive remains.

Z. Omb

Human or human-like remains have not yet been established.

Records

Festive potential remains.

Z. Omb

Better.

First distinction:

the skull is bone.

The hat is fabric.

Neither is assumed to have originated together.

Records

You think someone put the hat on afterward.

Z. Omb

Almost certainly.

Records

Ancient Christmas burial custom?

Z. Omb

No evidence.

The lilac staining appears in several places.

Around the lower margins.

Near parts of the orbital region.

Across some exposed bone surfaces.

And transferred onto portions of the hat and trim.

That makes it particularly useful.

Z. Omb

The same material appears on both biological and textile surfaces.

Records

Meaning we can compare how it behaves on each.

Z. Omb

Exactly.

A tiny dried sample is taken from already-loose residue.

Hemoglobin-associated material is present.

Records

Purple blood again.

Z. Omb

Blood is present again.

The additional lilac component is also detected.

Its profile resembles the samples from 116-L, 118-L, 130-L and 053-L.

Not perfectly.

But enough to justify placing 055-L in the same comparative group.

Records

Purple Stuff Folder.

Z. Omb

Still no.

Records

Lilac Blood Investigation?

Omb pauses.

Z. Omb

Acceptable as an informal project name.

Records immediately writes it in large letters.

The skull itself provides a new variable.

Previously, 118-L involved an isolated long bone.

055-L allows examination of lilac material across:

  • cortical cranial bone,
  • sutures,
  • cavities,
  • and irregular internal surfaces.

Records

So the skull is basically a much more complicated staining surface.

Z. Omb

Yes.

Fluid can pool and dry differently depending on surface geometry.

The eye sockets contain darker staining.

At first glance, that could suggest fluid originated inside them.

But gravity complicates the interpretation.

Z. Omb

Pooling does not establish origin.

Records

Because liquid runs downhill.

Z. Omb

And into recesses.

So the stain distribution alone cannot tell them whether the material came from inside the skull, was poured over it, or contacted it after removal.

The hat creates another problem.

Some lilac staining on the white trim has wicked into the fibers.

Records

So we can compare bone versus fabric.

Z. Omb

Yes.

On bone, the material largely dries on the surface and within pores.

On textile, capillary action draws it laterally through fibers.

Records

Same fluid, completely different pattern.

Z. Omb

Precisely.

That makes 055-L unexpectedly useful for studying substrate effects.

You gave me the project name already. I'm keeping mine.
