Osteological Examination 117-R
Material received: One bone.
Identification: Pending.
Condition: Recently associated with soft tissue or blood.
Anomalous properties: None apparent.
Research priority: Moderate.
EXAMINATION NOTE 1
Do not identify skeletal elements by resemblance alone.
Long bones share morphological characteristics across species, and stylization, damage, developmental variation and incomplete preservation may remove useful diagnostic features.
Measurements taken.
Photographs taken.
Surface examined under magnification.
Research priority amended: High.
NOTE 4
Bone is not structurally inert material.
This is frequently communicated poorly.
Living bone is vascularized, innervated tissue undergoing continuous remodeling through coordinated osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity.
The object currently on my table once participated in maintaining itself.
This is excellent.
Records annotation
Why is that excellent?
Z. OMB
Because bone is excellent.
NOTE 7 — BLOOD
Red staining is consistent with blood.
Confirmation pending.
If confirmed, blood may provide information unavailable from the skeletal material itself.
It should therefore be sampled separately before cleaning.
DO NOT CLEAN THE BONE.
This instruction has been attached to the specimen container.
A second copy has been attached to the laboratory sink.
NOTE 11 — FRACTURE ANALYSIS
No reliable interpretation of trauma should be made until the relevant surfaces have been examined.
Fracture characteristics may differ depending on multiple factors, including the mechanical properties of the bone at the time of damage.
Determining whether damage occurred around the time of death or substantially afterward can sometimes be possible.
Sometimes it cannot.
“Broken” is an observation.
“How, when, and why” are separate questions.
NOTE 16
Microscopic examination continues.
Research priority amended: Very High.
No anomalous properties identified.

Records
Did you find something unusual?
Z. OMB
Several things.
Records
Anomalous things?
Z. OMB
No.
