Z.O.M.B. Hazardous Materials Intake 011-P

A small round glass bottle arrives containing vivid green liquid.

A paper label reads:

POISON

Bright green vapor or flame-like material rises continuously from the neck.

Records places it in the chemical intake cabinet.

Records: Poison.

Z. Omb: Unknown substance labelled poison.

Records: Close enough.

Z. Omb: Not for storage purposes.

The bottle is treated as genuinely hazardous until identified.

No smelling.

No tasting.

No skin exposure.

No opening outside containment.

Records has apparently already considered one of those options.

Z. Omb: Your nose is not analytical equipment.

Records: I didn't do anything.

Z. Omb: Good.

Initial non-destructive tests:

Container: Glass
Liquid color: Bright green
Label: Handwritten “POISON”
Visible emission: Present
Emission identity: Unknown
Temperature: Near ambient
External radiation: No unusual reading detected
Container integrity: Intact

A tiny controlled sample is eventually taken under appropriate containment.

The interesting outcome: the material is genuinely toxic, but “poison” still does not identify what it is.

Omb's annoyance is therefore very specific.

Z. Omb: The warning is correct.

Records: Excellent.

Z. Omb: The documentation is terrible.

Further tests will investigate whether the green emission behaves unlike ordinary vapor:

  • it rises despite minimal temperature difference;
  • remains sharply bounded instead of dispersing normally;
  • returns toward the bottle if airflow moves it away;
  • or consists of suspended material that analysis fails to classify cleanly.

Omb does not jump to “magic.”

Current record:

Toxicity: Confirmed
Composition: Partially characterized / unresolved
Green color: Not itself evidence of toxicity
Visible emission: Genuine anomalous behavior
Label accuracy: Broadly correct
Label adequacy: Extremely poor
Research priority: High enough to justify controlled chemical analysis

Records adds:

At least whoever labelled it tried.

Omb writes:

Hazard communication should not require optimism.
