Primary question: Can a symbol remain identifiable when its original geometry is replaced by an entirely different visual structure?

Records puts the Demi edition beside the Ace edition.

Records

Same colors.

Z. Omb

Not the same structure.

Records

Very much not.

The Ace edition relies heavily on horizontal stripe relationships.

This one does not.

Instead, the palette has been split into two different geometric systems:

black + white → repeated vertical waves
purple → one dominant horizontal band

Z. Omb

The colors have been assigned different structural roles.

Records

So this isn't just rearrangement.

Z. Omb

Correct.

It is reinterpretation.

Omb traces the purple band.

Unlike the black and white elements, it does not repeat.

It cuts straight through the composition and immediately becomes a visual anchor.

Records

Purple is doing most of the shouting.

Z. Omb

Visually, yes.

Records

While black and white build the environment around it.

Z. Omb

That is a useful description.

This gives the edition a different research question from Ace.

The question is no longer:

Can two flags use the same colors and remain distinct?

It becomes:

Can the same symbolic palette survive being assigned completely new geometry?

The original Demisexual flag includes a prominent triangular component.

This design abandons that geometry entirely.

Yet someone familiar with the edition may still recover the intended identity from:

  • the black/white/purple palette,
  • the dominant purple interruption,
  • the product label,
  • and context within the larger Pride collection.

Records

So we're testing how much of the original symbol we can throw away.

Z. Omb

Transform.

Records

Throw away and reorganize.

Z. Omb

Acceptable.

Omb produces several variants.

Original flag geometry

→ black/white vertical waves + purple horizontal band

→ black/white waves only

→ purple band only

→ correct colors in random geometry

→ same geometry with unrelated colors

Records

Now we're actually separating color from shape.

Z. Omb

Yes.

That gives a clean comparison:

correct colors / transformed geometry
versus
correct geometry / changed colors
