Z.O.M.B. LABORATORIES

Odontological Record 115-R

Material received: One tooth.

Probable type: Molar.

Species: Undetermined.

Anomalous properties: None observed.

Research priority: Moderate.

NOTE 2 — STRUCTURE

Teeth are frequently described as bones.

They are not bones.

This distinction is not pedantic.

Enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp form a specialized biological structure with properties substantially different from osseous tissue.

Enamel is particularly notable.

It is the most highly mineralized tissue in the human body.

Unlike bone, mature enamel does not regenerate itself after substantial loss.

This is an objectively poor maintenance arrangement.

Records:
Are you criticizing teeth?

Z. OMB:
No.

Records:
You called them poorly designed.

Z. OMB:
I called one aspect of their maintenance arrangement poor.

Teeth themselves are remarkable.

NOTE 5 — ENAMEL

Enamel must repeatedly withstand mechanical loading during mastication while operating in a chemically variable environment populated by microorganisms.

It performs this function for decades.

It cannot meaningfully repair itself.

Records:
You're doing it again.

Z. OMB:
Doing what?

Records:
Sounding angry about teeth.

Z. OMB:
I am not angry.

The arrangement is simply unreasonable.

NOTE 9 — EVOLUTIONARY CONTEXT

Correction to earlier language:

“Poorly designed” is inappropriate.

Teeth were not engineered toward an ideal specification.

Evolution modifies inherited structures under selection pressures. A structure need only function sufficiently within the reproductive and ecological context in which it develops.

Modern human longevity, diet, food processing and medical expectations complicate evaluation considerably.

Records:
So you've withdrawn your complaint.

Z. OMB:
Scientifically, yes.

Records:
Personally?

Z. OMB:
No.

NOTE 14 — THE BLOOD

External red material sampled.

The presence of blood is unsurprising following extraction and does not independently indicate traumatic removal.

Examination of the tooth itself should precede assumptions concerning why it was removed.

Potential reasons for extraction are numerous.

No narrative will be assigned without evidence.

NOTE 19

Research priority amended: High.

Records:
Did you discover something?

Z. OMB:
Yes.

Records:
What?

Z. OMB:
Teeth.

Records:
You knew about teeth before today.

Z. OMB:
That is not equivalent to having adequately investigated them.

FINAL CLASSIFICATION

Object: Tooth
Probable morphology: Molar
Species: Pending
Blood: Sampled
Anomalous: No

Records annotation:

You cannot put “unacceptable” in a biological classification.

Z. OMB annotation:

It is in the remarks column.

Records:

That's not better.

Z. OMB:

It is correctly categorized.
